On Saturday May 5, 2007, the Palais de l'UNESCO hosted the grand gala evening of the Dekkal Thiossane association, an event placed under the patronage of the Permanent Delegation of Senegal to UNESCO and in partnership with the Organizing Committee of the 3rd World Festival of Black Arts (FESMAN III). In keeping with Dekkal Thiossane's mission to promote African artists and creators, the evening was attended by some 300 people: ambassadors, diplomats, international civil servants, businessmen, artists and cultural players. The evening began with a welcome speech by Mr. Mbékhor BÉYE, President of the Dekkal Thiossane association, who underlined the importance of this partnership with FESMAN, sharing common objectives of safeguarding and promoting the Black African intangible cultural heritage. Mr. Abdel Kader BOYE, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Senegal to UNESCO, and Mr. Alioune Badara BEYE, General Coordinator of FESMAN III, then took the floor, underlining the importance of culture as a vector for development and dialogue. The fashion show was one of the highlights of the evening, presenting the creations of Senegalese designer SADIO BEE, a specialist in bogolan fabric. His designs, with their striking patterns and colors, highlighted the richness and beauty of this traditional Malian textile. The artistic line-up then transported the audience to the heart of the African continent: Guinea-Bissau music ambassador SIDO set the stage alight with his lively rhythms, while singer Arame CAMARA, a resident of the Ensemble lyrique du Théâtre National Daniel Sorano in Dakar (who had come specially for the occasion), gave a captivating performance, testifying to the richness of Senegalese music. Ivorian singer DOTHY Z and her dancers then captivated the audience with their dynamic choreography, and finally Cameroonian diva QUEEN ÉTÉMÉ, whose powerful voice mesmerized the audience, delivered a memorable performance. Among the many personalities present were Mr. Olabiyi Babalola Joseph YAÏ (Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Benin to UNESCO), Mr. Inoussa OUSSEINI (Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Niger to UNESCO), Professor Manda KIZABI (Deputy Permanent Delegate of the Democratic Republic of Congo to UNESCO), Mr Léopold FAYE (Consul General of Senegal in France), Mr KOUASSI (Counsellor at the Permanent Delegation of Côte d'Ivoire to UNESCO), Mr Ousmane Blondin DIOP (Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Delegation of Senegal to UNESCO), the Cameroonian stylist Imane AYISSI, the Congolese journalist Lydie OMANGA and the great Ivorian singer REINE PÉLAGIE. An exotic dinner, concocted by a renowned caterer, delighted the taste buds of the guests, lulled by the spellbinding melodies of kora virtuoso Kémang KANOUTÉ, whose subtle playing accompanied the meal. A raffle, with numerous prizes including a round-trip plane ticket Paris-Dakar, added an extra touch of festivity to the evening, which ended with a dance party. This third edition of Dekkal Thiossane's annual gala once again demonstrated the vitality and creativity of the African cultural scene, confirming the association's essential role in promoting African arts and artists.
